Tamara Analysis

Opening shot is over titles saying 'from the creators of final destination' which immediately tells the audience the genre is horror as final destination is a famous horror film. The titles connote horror also as they are red/ orange which are a sudden signifier of horror and gore. 

There is an over the shoulder shot of the young male teenager spitting paper through a straw at the girl who gets bullied, followed by numerous shot reverse shots showing the facial expressions on both characters. The young male teenager is laughing and the girl ‘Tamara’ who is getting bullied looks sad and humiliated. He reads her book that drops that has the title ‘journey into witchcraft’ which shows that the girl that is getting bullied is into strange things and the supernatural. By him saying that it reinforces the genre and quickly shows audience the film is going to be about the supernatural and witchcraft. There are then numerous medium close ups of the class showing that everyone is always laughing at her, making the audience assume she is constantly bullied and no one likes her.

High angle shot of Tamara performing witchcraft in a circle and then a sound bridge of man saying ‘do you think this magic is going to make you feel better’ which shows the audience she is turning to this due to her being a victim of bullying and feeling lonely. Shows how they play a prank on her to try and utterly humiliate her and then close up of it going wrong and she smacks her head and dies. The voice over is explaining story throughout and is helpful in describing what’s going on. Shows how horrible bullies were as when she is dead they say ‘I’m not throwing my life away because of this looser’ even though they killed her and tried to degrade her. There is a long shot of them burying her in the woods, with dark lighting to connote the genre and create an eerie atmosphere.

Then medium close-up of her empty chair in class the next day to show audience she is dead but then suddenly close up of girl’s short skirt walking into class and its Tamara and she is back from the dead.

Close up of her face smiling and saying ‘sorry I’m late.’ Audience see she has gone extremely beautiful and no longer the typical ‘geek’ who is going to get bullied. Also she says ‘sorry I’m late’ sarcastically as they had killed her now she is back. Then close up of one of the bullies face terrifyingly shocked as he knows they killed and buried her the night before. Then all wonder how she is back from dead, the audience now know she is going to get her revenge, which is a similar idea to our trailer as its about someone being bullied then them coming back for revenge.

Audience suddenly realise she must be back from the dead due to her supernatural witchcraft and then a montage of shots showing how she’s making the lads love her and killing them off one by one. The voice over says ‘what she desires most is revenge’ which connotes to the audience she is going to get them all back for what they did to her. Numerous titles appear in scratchy horror font which build tension and explain why you should be scared of Tamara now. Pace increases and shots get shorter and faster, the music increases pace which all build tension and an eerie atmosphere.

Cast and Costumes

Rizwana- Victim number one. Female, conventionally most victims are female as traditionally they are seen as the weaker gender. Costumes such be casual every day wear but should be fairly feminine. As she is being held captive and has been a target of violence, we are going to use makeup to make her look more representative of a victim. She will also be wearing a gag to show that she is trapped and unable to get away and make her appear more helpless.

Emily- Victim number two. Female, conventionally most victims are female as traditionally they are seen as the weaker gender. Costumes such be casual every day wear but should be fairly feminine. She is walking down the road as though she is walking somewhere so she will be carrying a bag to make it more convincing and as though she is completely unsuspecting.

Tovia- victim number three. Female, conventionally most victims are female as traditionally they are seen as the weaker gender. Costumes such be casual every day wear but should be fairly feminine. However, in the shot where she wakes up in bed she should be wearing nightwear which is suitable for that situation.

Killer- At most points you only see what the killer is doing or just their hands. Therefore black gloves will be needed. Also in the shots where you can see the killer, they will be wearing all black- a black hoodie (with hood up) and trousers as well as having their face covered. Therefore the identity of the killer is hidden therefore creating enigma in the trailer making the audience more likely to want to see the film.

Locations and Props

Dark interior-school

Where the killer is looking at and cutting up the pictures. Where we can film his POV shot- close up.

Props for this location: Desk or table required. Newspapers / pictures, knife, black marker pen, gloves, desk lamp.

Other dark interior-school

Where Rizwana can be tied up and gagged. Must be able to film close ups, tracking shots and high angle shots.

Props for this location: Gag, makeup

Car

Film inside car and outside car. Use for match on action. Gives a sense of hope for escape. Film from outside window, from backseat and in front seat.

Props for this location: gloves, fake blood, car.

Stairs-school

Must be able to drag Tovia down filmed from bottom and from top- match on action. Good location as it shows an escape attempt. Can be filmed on stairs at school.

Props for this location: Gloves for killers hands.

Exterior- woods- The Plunge- Edenfield

Creates a sense of isolation. Can film Tovia running with us of long shots and medium shots. Enables the use of a variety of shots not just close ups as well as a variety of locations.

Can film Tovia running with us of long shots and medium shots. Enables the use of a variety of shots not just close ups as well as a variety of locations. Creates an eerie atmosphere and seems fitting to the negative vibe throughout the trailer.

Must be able to film from both sides of the street and be able to see killer behind Emily in the background. Cannot be too crowded.

Interior- Bedroom- Tovia's house
Must be able to film a long shot and medium shot. Tovia Wakes up (in bed, gasping and breathing heavily and screaming.

Possible Fonts and Titles

In our trailer we are planning on having titles near the start for narrative exposition; instead of a voice over as we didn't think we could get our voices to sound realistic. It is common in trailers to have overlay titles over establishing shots which is a possibility for our trailer. However it is also common in horror trailer to have a fade to black and then white on black titles due to the connotations of good, evil, life and death. Also the titles are sometimes red as red has connotations of blood and death which are common conventions of horror films.

There is usually some sort of eerie flickering effect on the title as well which adds to the atmosphere and themes in the film.

For our trailer we are going to have titles in between shots on a black background with white eerie serif font much like the font used for the Dream House trailer.

These titles will create narrative exposition therefore helping explain the story to the audience as well as creating enigmas to be answered in the full film. This makes the audience more likely to want to see the film so more money made and greater success.
